After a tense enthralling game, between two evenly matched teams, Haughmond finally overcame their first division opponents, Oakengates Athletic 4-1 after extra time.

In a game where both midfields had plenty of possession, Nick Dawe brought a fine save from Dan Manders in the Haughmond goal.

Matt Preece opened the scoring for Haughmond in the 35th minute, only for Dave Moore to equalise for the Gates in 42nd minute. During the second half Gates matched their Premier League opponents in every department and the game went into extra time.

Phil Bates’ mishit shot restored the lead for Haughmond in the first period of extra time with sub Craig Williams hitting a third and then Matt Preece, adding his second and Haughmond’s fourth to land the trophy.

The score line flattered Haughmond, who were made to work hard to beat off a very accomplished performance by the Gates team.
