Much to the delight of their travelling fans Ashville overcame North West Counties side Formby 1-0 in Saturdays 1st round FA Vase tie. Play was fairly even in the 1st period of a wind swept encounter although Ashville came closest to scoring when a Craig Griffiths free kick was tipped onto the top of the bar. After the break the visitors took control and a scintillating run by Dave Rudge was saved at the expense of a corner which was headed against the bar by Chris Barrow. The all important goal arrived just before the hour mark when Matty Cass got the final touch to Lee Hammond’s vicious in swinging flag kick. Ashville went on to spurn a number of chances and were able to repel Formby’s late attempts to equalize and go on to deservedly book a place in the 2nd round draw. Cheshire FA Amateur cup 2nd round action saw Willaston gain revenge for defeat in last season’s competition at the hands of Spurley Hey by overcoming the same opponents 2-1 courtesy of strikes by Dayo Akinlabi and Paul Ellison. Another away day success came the way of Capenhurst Villa who had Mark Ryan, Tony Ashton, Mike Urmston and an own goal to thank for their 4-0 triumph at Govan Athletic. A Paul Casey penalty 10 minutes from time was enough to enable West Kirby to advance to round 3 at the expense of Crewe FC but Manor Athletic bowed out by the same scoreline at Dukinfield Town. Defensive mistakes in the early part of each half put Newton on the back foot against visiting Middlewich and with their forwards in goal shy mood the hosts eventually went down to a dispiriting 3-0 defeat. In the all-West Cheshire clashes 1st Division Christleton were given a fright by 2nd Division Bronze Social. Steve Egan and Lee Dermody netted for the hosts while another Steve Finlay double counted for Christleton who won the penalty shoot out 4-3. Ellesmere Port [Peter McNulty] also required spot kicks to make progress after sharing 2 goals with Upton A.A. [Simon Andrews] while a George Pulford effort was enough for Chester Nomads to advance at the expense of New Brighton. Cammell Laird Reserves [John Johnson, John Wheadon, Matty Houghton, own goal] edged a 7 goal thriller at Vauxhall Motors Reserves [Craig Cairns,3] and new signing Dave Forbes hit a debut hat trick for Heswall and Richie Foulkes bagged a brace as they had matters to their own liking in the 6-1 demolition of Beb Athletic. Barry Coventry and James Halligan were 2 goal men as Mossley Hill Athletic eased to a 5-0 victory over Halebarn in the Liverpool Challenge Cup while Gary Powell, 3, and Dave Powell, 2, led the way as Marshalls Reserves thrashed Old Instonians 9-1 in the Liverpool Challenge cup but a 2-1 defeat by Collegiate OB signaled the end of Belfry’s [Danny Hart] interest in the competition.
In a reduced Division 1 programme Maghull [Lee Tynan pen, Ian Joinson, Brad Smart, Sean Robinson] took over the runners up spot after gaining a 4-0 verdict over Marshalls while Southport Trinity [Kevin Frankland] fought out a 1-1 draw with Marine Reserves [Tom Bobb]. Richmond Raith Rovers had Craig Speed, 2, and Jay Boyd registering as they celebrated their first Division 2 win of the campaign with a 3-0 defeat of fellow strugglers West Kirby Reserves. Hale Reserves were also in joyful mood after collecting their 1st points of the campaign in Division 3 after a Ryan Cullen strike was enough to overcome Capenhurst Villa Reserves. The battle of 3rd Division promotion hopefuls Helsby and Mersey Royal ended all square after the ever reliable Wes Huizer netted for the hosts while Tom Powell replied for Royal and this result allowed South Liverpool to take over at the top after they got the better of Manor Athletic Reserves 4-1 as Tom Stewart, Gary Dunning, Curtis Cummins and Matty O’Hanlon all hit the target. A 4 goal haul by Andrew Cashmore spearheaded Hale’s demolition of Runcorn Linnets in the Youth Division while best wishes go to Maghull’s Franny Smith whose worrying injury caused the abandonment of their game against Lower Breck Boys’.
