The Star Football Trophy (presented in 1921)
Guernsey’s earliest English language paper was The Star. It was first published on 29th June 1813, eighty-four years before the Guernsey Evening Press. The Star and The Guernsey Evening Press merged to form the Guernsey Press and Star in 1965. The 200th anniversary of the newspaper, was celebrated with a series of stamps issued on 31st July 2013.
It was they that presented the 8” bowl shaped trophy which is engraved - The Star Football Trophy / Presented in 1921 / For Annual Inter-Insular Competition / Teams of Schoolboys. It now has a 12” base formed of five engraved bands of the former winners, the newest at the top – 1921-58, 1959-1988, 1989-2016, 2017-19 and an as yet blank.
There have been 93 previous matches with 41 wins each and 11 matches drawn after extra time and the trophy shared. The last draw was in 2007 and since then the rules have been changed and “penalties” would now decide a drawn game.
