Hampshire Junior A Cup Second Round
It was bad day for the Basingstoke League clubs playing in the second round of the Hampshire Junior A Cup, with only two surviving, as Tadley Calleva A, Twentyten and Basingstoke Royals made their exit. The League however is assured of a club in the last eight, with Hook being drawn at home to Basingstoke United.

Basingstoke United won through, beating Aldershot visitors Traco Athletic 2-0. They did however survive a penalty in the opening stages when the Traco striker blazed over the bar, but just before the break Joe Cook fired home to see them ahead. Into the second half and alert Cook hit the bar with a good effort and later had a very fine looking shot well saved. United always looked in control and added a second when Cullum Chillcott took a corner kick and it ended up beating all in the box and ended up in the far corner of the net.

Hook as expected beat Basingstoke Athletic 7-1 after a tight first half. It was Athletic the better starters and Matt Stillwell had a shot cleared off the line and hit a good chance over the bar by the 25th minute. Hook looked shaken when in the 30th they went behind when they failed to clear a corner and James Lowton found the back of the net. The lead lasted just six minutes when James Neville netted following a James Westwood cross and the scores remained level at half time. Just one minute into the second period Hook took the lead. Good play by Dan Mellors and Westwood led to Andy Parker’s volley proving much too good for the keeper. In the 51st Parker scored again, another fine volley from 25 yards out and it became 4-1 when a Jon Noakes cross ended up off a defender for an own goal. Hook were in full cry now and in the 62nd Dave White put away another Noakes cross and the next came when a short corner led to the cross by Parker being diverted into the net by Neville. Parker then completed his hat trick after robbing a defender in the final few minutes.

Twentyten entertained Upham Reserves at Preston Candover and are still in shock after losing 1-0 to a team reduced to nine men by the 55th minute. In all the visitors received eight yellow cards as they took out any attacks and there was plenty mounted by the home team and countless chances in this one sided affair . It was in the 40th minute when the first player was sent off and then in 55th Upham lost their second man shown a red card. The goal that proved to be the decider came in the 70th minute when a free kick was lofted into the six yard box, was half headed out, but eventually scrambled over the line.

Basingstoke Royals, the current Division One leaders lost 1-0 to visitors West Totton. Tadley Calleva A had a very poor first half on their trip to Compton, beaten 2-0 with both goals coming from bad mistakes in defence. It was in the 23rd minute when keeper Dave Hicks did well to block a fierce shot, but the rebound hit unlucky Tadley defender Ashley Saunders on the knee for an own goal. Five minutes later a poor back pass from Gary
Harper led to Hicks conceding a penalty, he escaped a red card, but was beaten by the spot kick. Trailing 2-0 at the break, Manager Bradley Nash made changes, boosting the midfield by bring on Dane Walkley and later Liam Belcher and although they tightened things up, only snap shots from Saunders and Kye Theodore went close and it was really a lack leistered performance and brought about their third defeat in a row.

Hampshire Junior B Cup Second Round
It was better news in the Hampshire Junior B Cup where all four of the Basingstoke clubs involved won through to the next stage. Basingstoke Labour Cup had the most decisive win, beating Heathend Town Reserves 8-0. There were hat tricks for both Matt Kelly and Aaron Johns as they dominated play throughout. Aaron Johns had them a goal up after two minutes from a Charlie Couchion assist and Kelly soon made it 2-0 from a Mark West pass. Johns was on the end of a Josh Dickens corner for the third and Dickens made it 4-0 from a Mark Thorpe assist. Kelly then scored from a penalty and so completed his hat trick in the 40th minute. Right on half time Thorp received a good ball from Couchion for a 7-0 half time advantage. When easing up in the second half there was just the one more goal, when Johns completed his hat trick put through by Ibrahian Waheed.. The one unfortunate incident took place at the end when Mark Trope was sent off, along with one of the opposition for retaliation. Manager Dan Poulter takes his team to Newport on the Isle of Wight for the next stage.

AFC Berg continues their good run by beating Southampton League team Braishfield Reserves with a 2-1 win. Carlos Gonzales was on good form and put Dave Brickwood’s side a goal up in the 40th minute. The visitors hit back to level in the 70th minute, but Gonzales came up with his second to win through to the next round where they have been drawn at home to Sandown Reserves.

Winklebury Wizards had a 3-1 win against IOW visitors Carisbrook United Reserves. .Although it was 1-1 at half time, it was a rather one sided game with little offered by the Islanders. Wizards led 1-0 in the 16th minute when Richard Lowther did well to find Scott Large, who played a one two with Jay Read and put away the return pass. The equalizer was a bizarre goal. A long ball fell to home defender Jack Arthur who thought he heard the referee’s whistle, he picked up the ball and a penalty was awarded and converted. Josh Arthur and Large had good chances to regain the lead, but fired over the bar and it was left to George Lagden to score from a direct free kick in the 58th minute. Any chance of losing the game disappeared in the 65th minute when Alex Stevens, making a rare appearance, chipped the keeper. Wizards will meet another Island team in the last sixteen; they are at home to Kyngs Towne.

Overton United B has also been favoured with a home draw after going through 4-3 on penalties away to Athletico Romsey A. They took a fifth minute lead when Scotty Winterbourne scored following a Josh Smith free kick. The home side equalized in the 36th and then went in front just after half time. With 20 minutes left Overton drew level when Tom Green scored from a penalty and as neither side could score again, it meant a penalty shootout. Winterbourne, Green, Smith and Ewan Westwood converted and the vital save by keeper Gavin Alexander from the final Athletico kick, saw them through where they will meet Burghclere Reserves.
