North Hampshire DFA May Cup

After the results last Saturday, this competition is now down to the last eight. Six Basingstoke League teams are through to the Quarter Finals.

I went to Sherborne to see the home side Sherborne St John FC win 5-4 against Basingstoke Labour Club FC, with the winner coming in added time. It was a close game and the action was end to end. Labour took the lead in the 29th minute, it was goal ace Cameron George who put Labour in front following a good run and finish. Sherborne drew level when Luke Morgan headed home from a fine ball by Jack Stallard and before the break Sherborne extended their lead to 3-1, both goals from the classy Sachin Rai. George scored his second in the 54th, heading home a cross from Matt Kelly, but the two goal advantage was restored when Makum Limbu beat keeper Melvyn Craggs at the far post. Matt Kelly scored another for Labour in the 84th and their substitute Sam Gook made it 4-4 in the 86th. With a penalty shoot out looking likely, the decider came in the second minute of added time, when over came a corner taken by Rai and Sherborne centre back Tom Brickley headed home the decider.

Tron FC proved much too strong for Basingstoke Athletic FC Reserves and registered a 12-1 win. It was 7-1 at half time, with the lone goal for Athletic coming via Ryan Cousins who also hit the bar. Otherwise it was all Tron with Zac Reynolds (normally a full back, moving up front to fill in for their suspended striker Ben Nicholls) scoring five of their goals. There was a hat trick for Richard Kalwarczyk, two for Jamie Ballantyne and singles from Joe Harris and Sam Nicholls who scored the pick of the bunch with a 20 yard shot into the top corner.

Basingstoke United FC faced South Wonston Swifts FC and went down 2-1. Swifts are second in the Andover League and looked a useful side, but it was United taking the lead after 20 minutes, Joe Cook tucking away a good ball from Dan Southgate. Swifts replied in the 40th after United failed to clear a corner kick, but United’s Tom Hartley soon had a good chance with a lob which drifted just over the bar. It was in the 70th minute when Swifts netted the winner. Hartley tried to switch play to the left, it did not come off and it led to the goal, although keeper James Sallows got a hand to it, he could not keep it out.

The North Hants Junior Cup match between TDI Group and AFC Berg was postponed.

Basingstoke Junior ‘A’ Cup Quarter Finals

There was no surprise result at Hook where Overton United FC ‘A’ were visitors and Hook FC, the current holders, moved through to the Semi Finals following a comfortable 5-0 win. It did not help Colin Phillimore’s men when they lost Jamal Rose, sent off following a straight red card after just 30 minutes. Hook took full advantage and led by half time when Andy Parker put away a cross from Dave White. Tom Davies made it 2-0 from a Charlie Page centre and in the 60th Aaron King headed Dan Mellors’ cross past the keeper. A through ball from Parker handed Davies his second and Karl Perkins scored the fifth with a placed shot from outside the penalty area.

It is Hampshire Irons FC who will join them in the last four after a 7-6 win after extra time at Silchester against DJS Telecoms FC. Charlie Henry had Irons two goals ahead in the early stages, but DJS came back to level with a free kick taken by Pete Lomax and an own goal. Henry completed his hat tick in the 44th from Rob Mead’s cross, but early in the second half Jason Freathy took a pass from Lee Neal to level at 3-3. In the 50th minute Simon Head received a good ball from Mead to put Irons ahead again 4-3, but Allan Morgan headed home a Ben Wood cross to make it 4-4 with fifteen minutes to go. There was ten minutes left when Telecoms had Lee Neal sent off and they found it hard with extra time to play. Irons Substitute Sam Frizzle took a pass from Chris Arnold five minutes into extra time to put Irons in front again and when DJS were awarded a penalty that would have brought them level again, Dax Bayley did well to save the spot kick by Shaun Blackman. A good run and finish by Henry gave him his fourth to put Irons 6-4 ahead. Another Irons own goal made the score 5-6. The on form Henry then netted his fifth goal and although a late strike from Chris McKenzie made it interesting, their was no dramatic end, even so it was a great effort by Danny Stafford’s depleted team.

Basingstoke Junior ‘B’ Cup Quarter Final.

Bounty United FC are through to the Semi Finals of the Basingstoke Junior ‘B’ Cup after an easy 7-2 win against Winklebury Wizards FC at Castle Field. They were on top from at the start and after ten minutes Matt King opened his account to see the Cricketers ahead. After a long shot from King was parried, Steve Bucksey followed up to net the rebound. King then made it 3-0 and by half time it was 5-0, Andy Darmody with a scrambled effort and a Mitchell Stokes penalty after Mike Gilham was fouled. Darmody made it 6-0 before Wizards broke through to score two quick goals through Dom Stevens and Connor Stratton. Sub. Matt Love was the final Bounty scorer from a Jordon Willis assist.
