Seeking their 1st trophy since joining the Carlsberg West Cheshire League in 1999 Maghull kept up the pressure on leaders West Kirby by ramming home 6 goals without reply when visiting Willaston. Ryan Stamper,2, Ben Sumner, Lee Tynan, Sam Wilkie and Mike Boyle were the men doing the damage. Chris McGinn and Dave Forbes steered West Kirby to a 2-0 home success over table trailers Blacon YC while newly promoted Southport Trinity move into 3rd spot after Ian Morrison and Mike Kelly earned them the spoils in the 2-1 defeat of Ellesmere Port who replied through John Atkinson. Heswall entertained Helsby at Gayton Park and took an early lead courtesy of Adrian Moody only for the visitors central defender Craig Ireland to hammer in an equalizer before the break A close contest was decided in favour of the hosts when Owen Davies applied the finishing touch to a sweeping left wing move. Having defeated Newton 4-2 in their midweek Cheshire Amateur cup tie Vauxhall Reserves were brought down to earth on Saturday when Jack Booth and Tom Amos notched doubles for Marine Reserves in a 5-0 success. Newton picked themselves up as Paul Robinson netted the games only goal against visiting Christleton while Marshalls [Sean Robinson,2, Phil Davies and Richard Jones] enjoyed a 4-0 home victory over Upton AA.
In Division 2 attention was focused on David Iqbal who received a worthy pre match award prior to making his 400th appearance for AFC Bebington. David has missed only 1 game in 5 seasons and on Saturday helped his side to claim a 2-0 victory over West Kirby Reserves with hot shot Graham Carvell bagging both goals. The only two sides above Bebington in the table are Chester Nomads and Ashville who go head to head this Saturday and each warmed up by gaining maximum reward at the weekend. Kieron Smith was a 2 goal man for leaders Nomads who overcame Heswall Reserves 3-1 while Timmy Bigland was a hat trick hero for an Ashville outfit who ran out 6-0 winners at basement side Bronze Social. Mossley Hill Athletic got the better of Richmond Raith Rovers as Simon Ellison and Ysef Malik netted in their 2-0 triumph while New Brighton had James Clare posting twice in their odd goal in 5 win at Maghull Reserves. In the remaining game Hale and Mallaby shared 6 goals.
It was Complete Focus Shield day in Division 3 with Ashville Reserves earning the most plaudits after overcoming Upton AA Reserves 10-0 as Andy Johnston led the way with a treble. Three ties went to extra time with AFC Bebingon Reserves emerging as 3-1 winners at Ellesmere Port Reserves and Marshalls Reserves being 3-2 victors at Helsby Reserves. Penalties were required after Merseyside Police and Hale Reserves shared 8 goals in their tie with Hale holding their nerve to win the shoot out 3-1. Also through to round 2 are Capenhurst Villa Reserves, Manor Athletic, Runcorn Linnets Reserves and New Brighton Reserves.
Youth Division leaders Maghull [Elliot Burke, Own Goal] suffered a 3-2 defeat at Runcorn Town [Liam Fitzmaurice, Gareth Hewitt, Adam Gerrard] while nearby 2nd placed Halewood Town [David Worsley] were going down to their 1st reversal of the campaign when Runcorn Linnets Youth completed a 4-1 victory thanks to strikes by Chris Hough, Paul Dinsdale, Ryan Laughton & Tony Murphy].
