Premier Division:
The Premier Combination League came to a close this week with the last of the promotion and relegation issues settled in both divisions.
On Saturday, Mendip United were crowned Premier Division champions for the second year running after closest rivals Longwell Green Reserves and Highridge United played out a 2-2 draw. Mendip had needed just a point to secure their place at the summit thanks to a 2-2 draw of their own at Lebeq FC in midweek, but Longwell’s result meant the title was confirmed without them kicking a ball.
Ultimately, Longwell paid the price for their slow start to the season but will take some solace from their 2nd place finish, which was confirmed with a 5-1 thrashing of Winterbourne United Reserves last Tuesday. Highridge United secured a 3rd-place finish after cruising to a 5-0 win over Eden Grove on the same evening.
Down at the bottom, Totterdown United are all but safe after they secured a 2-2 draw with already-relegated Shaftesbury Crusade. Nicholas Wanderers, who did not play this weekend, must win their final game against 4th-place Lebeq by a 9-goal margin to stay up.
Elsewhere, Hallen Reserves and Winterbourne United Reserves played out a 0-0 draw while Lebeq capped off a good week with a 6-1 hammering of Wick.
Premier One:
In the Premier One, after Bitton Reserves were promoted as champions last week, attention turned towards who would be joining them in the top tier next season. Going into their final games last Wednesday, Bristol Manor Farm Reserves and Seymour United were separated by just a single point. With Manor Farm ahead in second, Seymour faced a must-win game at struggling Lawrence Rovers and needed their rivals to drop points at Sea Mills Park. On the night, however, there was little drama after a poor performance from Seymour saw them lose 2-1. At Manor Farm, a brilliant brace from Dan Wistone-Richards helped the hosts to a comfortable 4-2 victory and secured their promotion to the Premier Division.
Down at the bottom, DRG Frenchay needed to win both their games last week to have any chance of leapfrogging Brimsham Green into safety. They didn’t come close. DRG were relegated last Tuesday after being thrashed 8-2 at home by Oldland Abbotonians Reserves, a result which safeguarded Lawrence Rovers and Brimsham Green’s places in the division for another year.
With the promotion and relegation spots decided, the rest of the league fixtures had an end-of-season feel to them. Roman Glass St. George Reserves cruised to a 5-0 win over Brislington Cricketers while relegated Patchway Town Reserves ended their miserable season in suitable style with an 8-1 trouncing at the hands of Bitton Reserves. Frampton Athletic secured 6th place after a 2-2 draw at Greyfriars Athletic and a 3-1 defeat at AEK Boco Reserves, while Sea Mills Park are guaranteed their highest-ever finish in the Premier One after a 1-0 win at DRG Frenchay moved them into 4th.
Elsewhere, with safety assured for Lawrence Rovers, the side took the foot off the gas against Oldland Abbotonians and were soundly beaten 6-0.
