Wirral DFA Senior Cup holders, Capenhurst Villa, secured their passage to this season's final, after they overcame rival Go2Day West Cheshire League Division One outfit Ellesmere Port Town. The keenly contested South Wirral derby was settled 2-0 in Cape's favour, thanks to efforts from Nathan Lightfoot and Kirk McMurray, a previous winner of this trophy as a Port player against Heswall, WRITES ERNIE MCDONALD.
Another all West Cheshire clash saw Maghull eclipse FC Bootle and merit a place in the LCFA Challenge Cup semi-finals, Adam Hammill and Jason Jeffries applying the finishing touches in a 2-1 victory. Jacob Jones was on target for FC Bootle.
Congratulations also to Youth Division representatives, Athletico Blues, who safely negotiated their LCFA Saturday Youth Cup 3rd round clash with Northern City Juniors . A Baden Clarendon double was supplemented by further efforts from Joel Nunnen, Thomas Yates and George Walker in a comfortable 5-2 triumph.
On the minus side, there was no joy for Marshalls Res. who went down 2-0 at home to former West Cheshire League members, Cheshire Lines, in the LCFA Junior Cup quarter finals and despite efforts from Leo Reynolds and Adil Mohammed, it wasn't Mossley Hill Ath. U23's day, when they lost 10-11 on penalties, after their tussle with Huyton Stanley FC had produced a 2-2 stalemate.
On the domestic scene, fourth placed Newton and current Division One pacesetters, Mossley Hill Ath. locked horns on Friday evening at the Jericho Lane hub, and it was Mossley who took the honours and went four points clear of nearest rivals, Maghull, after goals from Caleb Jones, Dom Murphy, Mark Owens and Jonathan O'Sullivan sealed a 4-2 result. Joseph Williams bagged both goals for the hosts, who now trail the leaders by fourteen points and must sense that their challenge for the title this season is on the wane. Reigning champions, Mersey Royal, were elevated to sixth place in the table, and were indebted to a solitary strike from Jamie Gann which won the day at Helsby. Division Two leaders, Mallaby, bidding to return to the top flight for a third spell, clinched a league double over a resilient Neston Nomads, and opened up a six point gap at the top, following Saturday's 4-2 win. Tom Edge scored twice and was joined on the scoresheet by James Fee and Ellis Byrne, with Callum Spence and Nathan Davidson in reply for Nomads. Fourth placed challengers, Runcorn Sports, stayed in contention, and recorded their tenth win of the season, after they eclipsed Higher Bebington Kelma, 4-0, courtesy of a goal apiece from James O'Connor, Dom Bazely, Stephen Woodward and Reece Jones. Sports remain eight points adrift of the leaders from the same number of games played.
Saturday's Division Three action saw third placed Helsby Res. crank up their promotion challenge following a 5-1 success at Ellesmere Port Town Res., confirmed by efforts from Tom Brady (2) Connor Siner (2) and Adam Harding. Rainhill Town Res. also struck five times, Chris Sheehan (2) Harry Warren, Jack Van Aston and George Sorenson leaving their calling cards in a 5-0 decision over Great Sutton.
