A typical Beckham goal was the highpoint as Southport Trinity lifted themselves off the bottom of the Division 1 table when gaining a 3-1 verdict over Ellesmere Port. The stunning 2nd half strike by Mike Beckham was worthy of his world famous cousin. Earlier Port had taken the lead through Mark Jones which was wiped out by Carl Ennis on the stroke of halftime. Kevin Frankland completed Trinity’s win in the dying minutes as Trinity played their last game at Netherpool before moving to their new home, complete with G3 pitch, in Skelmersdale. With 2nd placed Maghull going down at Heswall, Ashville stretched their lead at the top to 7 points courtesy of their 6-0 demolition of Upton AA. Chris Barrow led the way with a hat trick which was supplemented by Dave Rudge, Steve Connor and Danny Edwards. Richie Foulkes and Dave Forbes were 2nd half marksmen for Heswall as they won an entertaining encounter with Maghull, 2-0. Mossley Hill Athletic lie 4th after a Mike Teiman penalty just before the break was enough to earn maximum reward at Vauxhall Motors Reserves while John Cross, Brad Foster, Carl Berquist and Danny Kelly all registered as Marine Reserves overcame hosts Willaston [Trevor Worsley] 4-1. As a forerunner to their Cheshire Amateur cup semi final clash, Chester Nomads got the better of Cammell Laird Reserves by 5 goals to 2. Keiran Smith and Gareth Caughter each bagged a brace for Nomads while James Kenyon and Ian Brunt replied for Lairds. Jack Ford again found the net for West Kirby and his double was bettered by a treble from John Hughes as West Kirby ran out 6-1 winners against Blacon YC [Adam Langton]. There was an excellent 2-1 win for Marshalls who had an own goal and a Phil Davies strike to thank for their Liverpool FA Challenge cup ¼ final success over Stoneycroft.
Division 2 leaders Beb Athletic were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Heswall Reserves who had veteran Jock Harrison on target with the dependable Graham Carvell posting for the hosts. In midweek Prescot Cables Reserves [Chris McGann, Lee Owens] snatched victory with the last kick of an absorbing contest against Ashville Reserves [Robbie Black] but the Wallasey outfit bounced back in fine style when overwhelming Manor Athletic 7-0 as Paul Howell led the way with a brace. Although Tommy Carroll obliged for New Brighton it couldn’t prevent them going down 3-1 hands at the hands of West Kirby Reserves [ Lee Davies, Ryan Thompson, Mark Bainbridge] and Mallaby [John Hedges, 2, Neil Falls] also recorded an encouraging away victory when defeating Bronze Social [Steve Egan, Jay Thompson] by the odd goal in 5. Mike Urmston was a 2 goal man as Capenhurst Villa returned from Maghull Reserves with an excellent 5-1 success under their belts while Marshalls Reserves fought out a 2-2 draw with Runcorn Linnets Reserves.
The two leading protagonists in the Division 3 promotion race each recorded healthy victories. Leaders South Liverpool [Matty Butler, 2, Kevin Martin, Gary Dunning, Neil Fisher] overcame table trailers Hale Reserves 5-1 and Helsby [Wes Heizer, 2, Alan Bond, 2, Craig Evans, John Coady] ran in 6 goals without reply against Beb Athletic Reserves. Belfry continue to give a good account of themselves after moving up from the Youth Division and Saturday’s 2-1 defeat of Manor Athletic Reserves [Gary Fletcher] was endorsed by goals from Ryan Fossard and Danny Hart. Neston Nomads [Rob Cottrall., Alex Clare] collected a welcome 3 points thanks to a narrow 2-1 win at Merseyside Police [John McAllister] and Upton AA Reserves [Stuart Cossins, Ryan Cartwright] enjoyed a similar sized win over Ellesmere Port Reserves [Danny Ramsay]. The only two games completed in the Youth Division brought success for the top two with South Liverpool [Mike Tomlinson, Callum Brown, Cabral Dixon, o.g.] seeing off REMYCA United [Mitchell Farrell] 4-1 while Jordan Lorde was a hat trick hero as 2nd placed Maghull also recorded a 4-1 victory, at the expense of 3rd placed Lower Breck Boys, 4-1.
