There were shocks galore in Saturday’s reduced programme as all of the leading 3 in Division 1 went down to defeat. Major surprise was at table topping Ashville who played host to a Vauxhall Motors Reserve side seeking their 1st win in 6 outings. Dave Rudge did find the net for Ashville but Kynan Mason and Josh White struck for The Motormen whose 2-1 triumph lifted them into the top half of the table. Second placed Maghull failed to find the net for the 2nd week in succession and this allowed champion side West Kirby to take full advantage thanks to Adam Lea’s solitary successful strike. On their day Marine Reserves are a match for any side and so it proved again on Saturday when goals by Paul Pearson and Brad Foster put paid to 3rd placed Newton who were unable to register a reply. Blacon YC’s long search for a league win is over after they overcame Cammell Laird Reserves 3-1. Jamie Rogers, Lee McElmeel and Adam Langton were the host’s marksmen with Richie Owens hitting Laird’s only reply. Fresh from a 2-0 victory over Maghull, Heswall visited a Willaston outfit having just suffered 2 heavy defeats but on a windswept afternoon the hosts ran out 2-1 winners. Heswall fielded a number of ex Willaston players which gave the game an extra edge and chances were few but Willaston went into the interval a goal to the good thanks to Paul Ellison’s fine 23rd minute strike. Twelve minutes after the break Heswall’s Tom Coan received his marching orders and Willaston soon capitalized thanks to Colin Cunliffe’s superbly placed shot. The visitors fought back and although with 16 minutes remaining Dominic Holden ran clear to reduce the arrears, the hosts saw the game out and claimed 3 vital points. Matters finished all square at Upton AA who had Ryan Brown netting while Kevin Kirkpatrick was on target for opponents Southport Trinity. Second Division Hale produced a tremendous performance before going down to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool Premier League top dogs Waterloo Dock in the ¼ finals of the Liverpool Challenge cup. Hale had hit the bar in a goal less 1st half with Dock’s winning goal arriving courtesy of an unfortunate goalkeeping error.
Only three Division 2 games went ahead and Prescot Cable Reserves, with games in hand, stayed in the promotion hunt courtesy of a 3-0 home victory over Bronze Social. Sam Gifford, Mike Lacey and Ashton Gibiliru obliged for Cables while Jack Webb, Josh Smith and Lewis Buckley inspired Runcorn Linnets as their 3-0 success came at the expense of struggling Heswall Reserves. Maghull Reserves were grateful to Steve Carroll, 2, and Danny Mogan who produced the goods in the 3-1 defeat of Marshalls Reserves [Gary Powell].
Hale Reserves entered their contest with 3rd Division 2nd placed side Helsby, with just 4 points to their name but were able to increase their tally to 7 after one of the season’s most surprising results. Josh Stead and Ian Stockton were the Hale heroes in their 2-1 triumph while James McCartney responded for a Helsby side tasting league defeat for only the 2nd time this campaign. Chester Nomads Reserves just edged a 5 goal thriller against visiting Merseyside Police with Steve Cunningham adding to Peter Fitzpatrick’s double for Nomads while James McAllister was a two goal man for Police. Christleton Reserves had Ronnie Morgan and Nathan Mapletoft posting as they got the better of visiting Belfry 2-0, while Phil Duncan was a hat trick star for Mossley Hill Athletic Reserves who remain in 3rd place as a result of a 5-1 win over Capenhurst Reserves. In the Division’s remaining game Ellesmere Port Reserves came away from New Brighton Reserves with maximum reward after Ryan Nichol and Matty Scott had netted in the 2-0 success. Reduced Youth Division action saw Maghull elevated to top spot when Adam Wilkinson led the way with a double as they got the better of Runcorn Town, 4-1 while Lee Turkington also bagged a brace in Runcorn Linnetts 5-2 disposal of Pex Hill. A solitary Will Myers strike was enough for Widnes Town to claim all 3 points at Hale.
