HAMPSHIRE JUNIOR 'A' & 'B' CUP

It was the first round of the County A and B Cups and a good day for the Basingstoke clubs in the Hampshire A Cup where all four clubs competing against outside opposition were victorious. Match of the day was at Southampton where Sherborne St John went through following a marathon penalty shootout which they won 10-9 in the end. It was 3-3 at the end of ninety minutes and with no extra time in this competition it meant straight into penalties. It was AFC Phoenix they were playing and were trailing 1-0 at half time. Declan Shuttleworth equalized from a penalty and Alex Izzo put them in front.The home side again leveled the scores, but Ronnie Tamale made it 3-2 with five minutes left. Phoenix made it 3-3 in the 90th and this meant penalties. Shuttleworth, Izzo, Mike Shillingford, James Brown, Dan Hamlin, Jared Moore, Tom Brickley, Peter Dixon, Sam Hilton and finally Tamale converted and the tenth from Phoenix was saved by keeper Dave Poynton. Rising Sun DC made hay at Sherborne Road against Compton Reserves by winning 13-0. The goals came from four apiece for Ben Nicholls and Lee Chambers. Richard Kalwarsyk, Lorne Howard, Jon Flanagan, Ben Vine, an own goal. It was at 9-0 when the former Welly Old Boys winger Flanagan, who had only come off general suspension on Friday, was sent off.. Bramley United were also successful against BTC Southampton A away by beating them 5-0. Sam Cato had a good day by scoring a hat trick. He gave them the lead after good play by Aaron Burt and headed the second from a Burt corner kick. Stuart Leddy made it 3-0 following a one two with Cato, who then made it four and completing his hat trick after good play by Charlie Manning and Leddy. Remaining well in control, the fifth came when Leddy chipped the keeper and then scorned his chance of a hat trick by seeing his penalty kick well saved. Hook had an easy passage through to the next round when in a free scoring mood entertained IOW visitors Holmwood Athletic and won 10-1. Andy Haig helped himself to four goals, with two apiece for Andy Parker and Aaron King and singles for Tim Hearson and Pete Silvester.

In the Hampshire B Cup Winklebury Wizards also had a big win on their visit to the IOW where they won 9-0 against Kyngs Towne. A 50 yard run by Josh Dickens opening the scoring and by half time Ben Clarke and Scotty Winterbourne had made it 3-0. The goal of the match came from Robson Pereira with a brilliant volley and in an easy second half Hugo Carlos scored a straight hat trick and further goals came from Clarke and Winterbourne. Basingstoke Athletic was the only other local team to win through by beating AFC Hiltingbury Reserves 3-0 in Southampton. It was Athletic dominating the game throughout, with Sam Patterson scoring two in the first half and although still well on top, just the one after the break from Dale Bristow. Labour Club had close game away to Hythe Aztecs, losing 4-3 with the winner coming late in the game. They went a goal down after 20 minutes, but Jack Mead leveled by the break. They again fell behind, but Mike Hill took advantage of fumble by the keeper to make it 2-2. Again they went behind, but a free kick taken by Ryan Willows gave them hope of coming home with a win, but close to end Hythe came up with the decider. . Overton United B had enough chances to have won this tie easily but in the end went down 2-1 at home to Shield FC from Southampton. Hayden Chalker and Neil Ryan both went close after Overton trailed in the 30th minute and when Ryan did at last find the net with a solo effort, it looked it could be the turning point. It was not to be for in the 60th the visitors went in front again and despite having all the play could not reply again. Sherborne St John Reserves faced a very fit young Crofton Saints Under 21 side and were well beaten 5-1 at home. A defence splitting passl saw them trail after 20 minutes, but they did come back to equalize through Conner Perrin five minutes later. Five minutes from the break a 35 yard shot went in off the post and they trailed 2-1 at the break and after this they were not at the races in the second period.
