Brief History

Clowne Wanderers Football Club was formed in 1982, which makes it one of the oldest football clubs in the area. Ever since it was formed, the Club has played in the Chesterfield Sunday League. A Reserve team was formed in 1996, primarily to give younger players experience with a view to them eventually stepping up to play for the First Team. An Over 35’s team was formed a few seasons ago and they compete in the Wragg League on a Saturday.

Probably the most successful season in the Club’s history was 2007/08, when both the First Team and Reserves won their respective league titles. The First Team appeared in the Derbyshire Senior Cup Final for two years running in 2011/12 and 2012/13, but unfortunately were runners-up on both occasions.

Clune Street is the spiritual home of Clowne Wanderers. The team has played its home games there from the very beginning, apart from a two year spell of playing at Carr Vale while the pitch at Clune Street was moved to accommodate an access road to a new housing estate.

Scott McMillan is the current First Team manager, with Daryl Pearson handling the Reserves. The club captain is Josh Madin. The team has now been based at the Ashlea Club in Clowne for a number of seasons. Clowne Wanderers takes pride in being a real family club, with several current players following in their father’s footsteps by pulling on the black & white shirt every Sunday morning.

Goalkeeper Jonny “Safe Hands” Winnard played in Clowne Wanderers first ever game in 1982 against Racecourse Tavern and has appeared for the team in every season since, although these days he only helps out in case of suspension or injury. He does, however, still play every week for our Over 35’s team.
