Roundup 13 Novemeber 2010
CARLSBERG WEST CHESHIRE AFL
MATCH ROUND UP W/E 13th NOVEMBER
Pyke Cup 1st round ties took centre stage in Saturdays Carlsberg West Cheshire programme with the game of the day seeing Southport Trinity emerging victorious from a penalty shoot out following a thrilling contest with West Kirby that ended 3-3 after extra time. Kirby struck 1st when Paul Casey converted a 16th minute penalty only for Trinity to level just before the break as central defender Callum Kelly netted a left wing corner at the 2nd attempt. Neither side could make a 2nd half breakthrough but minutes into extra time Trinity substitute Eric Woodward outpaced the Kirby defence to fire his side into the lead. It was then the turn of Kirby substitute John Johnson to find the net only for his side to concede a penalty which was dispatched by Phil Frankland. The visitors again struck back as Dave Forbes made it 3-3 but it was Trinity who were destined to reach round 2 by winning the shoot out 3-1. Elsewhere in the competition Upton AA [Steve Finlay,2, Simon Andrews] ended a poor run of results when defeating hosts Helsby [Craig Ireland] 3-1 and Ellesmere Port [Peter McNulty, Ben Smith, James Garry] enjoyed the same margin of success when overcoming Marshalls [Sean Robinson]. Newton avenged their Cheshire Amateur Cup defeat at the hands of Vauxhalls Motors Reserves when a 2nd half Lee Kissock penalty settled a close encounter at Rivacre Road and Heswall had Matty Houghton to thank for their single goal success at Marine Reserves. Lennox Beddows struck both goals as Christleton got the better of struggling Cammell Laird Reserves [Paul McDonnell] 2-1, and Ryan Stamper and Tom Foley netted to see Maghull through to the next stage courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Blacon YC.
Chester Nomads still head Division 2 after a Jack Delgardo brace inspired their 3-1 defeat of Maghull Reserves and 2nd placed Ashville also had a 2 goal man in Andy Kingdon as they stopped Richmond Raith Rovers in their tracks thanks to a 4-0 success. Regular marksman Graham Carvell was again on target as Beb Athletic drew 1-1 with Prescott Cables Reserves who had Sam Gifford registering while New Brighton kept in the promotion hunt as Paul Howell, Neil Ashurst, Lee Forsythe and Jay Clare all struck against a Heswall Reserves side unable to muster a reply. Mossley Hill Athletic maintained the excellent form when Simon Ellison,2, and Yusef Malik spearheaded their 3-0 victory at Bronze Social and Grahame Davidson netted for Capenhurst Villa as they shared the points with Hale who replied through Craig Williams.
The top of the table clash in Division 3 went decidedly the way of Manor Athletic who had a 3 goal hero in Lloyd Ithell as they trounced leaders Runcorn Linnets Reserves 5-1. Chris Tolley and Andy Grimes also registered for the hosts with Jack Webb hitting the Linnets consolation. Third placed New Brighton Reserves [Paul Culpit, Steve Kane, Graham Edge] edged out Upton Reserves [Andy Roberts, Mark Thomson] by the odd goal in five and Helsby Reserves [Ian Cox, Anthony Goulding] were 2-1 winners at Hale Reserves [Haydon Carlson]. Chris Clarke and Mike Jump were on target for Youth Division table toppers Maghull as they got the better of lowly Widnes Town who had Chris Foster replying and Hale lie 2nd after Brad Williams, Spence Douglas and an own goal counted in the 3-0 defeat of Helsby.
