LMAC win after a penalty shoot-out
CT66 F.C. were looking to repeat their success in last season’s final as they took on LMAC Spartans in this season’s Premier Division League Cup Final.
Not one of our classic finals the game finally being decided by a penalty shoot-out as the game finished goalless after a 120 minutes of football.
The competition was extremely grateful to the hard work of the ground staff at Witham Town F.C. to get the game on after a week of heavy rain. Neither keeper was really tested in the first half, and chances were limited. LMAC skipper Eddie Hart shot wide when well placed, whilst the best chance of the half fell to Sam Deliue who blazed over.
Half Time – CT66 F.C. 0 LMAC Spartans F.C. 0
CT started much the stronger in the second half and Deliue again wasted a great opportunity when he was put clear only to see Cole in the LMAC goal thwart his effort. CT skipper Darren Godfrey thought he had done enough to break the deadlock when he was found at the far post he calmly took the ball past two defenders and again Cole saved well at close range.
CT were on top for much of the half but failed to secure that all important goal.
Injuries were causing LMAC to rotate their squad, but Hart continued to be a constant threat to the CT defence. As the game drifted LMAC almost snatched a late winner when from a corner an effort on goal was cleared off the line.
Full Time – CT66 F.C. 0 LMAC Spartans F.C. 0
Hart missed a glorious opportunity in the first period of extra time when he shot wide of the upright, and in the second period thought he had finally scored, when LMAC broke clear from a CT66 free kick, with only the keeper to beat he thudded his effort against the post
And so the game went to a penalty shoot out
Extra Time – CT66 F.C. 0 LMAC Spartans F.C. 0
Crucially both Shane Martin and Sam Deliue missed for CT66, whilst LMAC had converted their first three penalties it left skipper Hart to net the all important penalty to see new boys LMAC lift the trophy
