MATCH ROUNDUP W/E 12th FEBRUARY 2011

On an eventful day for the Carlsberg West Cheshire League the lead changed hands at the top of both Divisions 1 and 2 while 2nd Division Mossley Hill Athletic blitzed their way to the final of the Liverpool FA Challenge Cup courtesy of a 7-1 win over Page Celtic. A first half double from Yusef Malik gave Mossley a 2-0 advantage and although Celtic pulled one back early in the 2nd period a clever back heel completed Malik’s hat trick and further goals were added by Barry Coventry,2, James Halligan and Ryan Powell. Southport Trinity failed to make it an all West Cheshire final when despite a Colin McDonald equalizer it was East Villa who emerged as 3-1 victors. A Phil Jones strike early in the 2nd half gave Vauxhall Motors Reserves the lead over title chasing Maghull and with forty something player/manager Alan Schumacher setting the example the Motormen successfully defended the advantage to emerge with a 1-0 victory. West Kirby grasped the opportunity to take over at the top when defeating Newton by the odd goal in 5 but were given a fright by opponents who had pulled back from 2 goals down to level at 2-2. Chris McGinn, Kris Hesketh and a Paul Casey spot kick counted for Kirby while John Paul Stanhope and Kieran Fleetwood replied for Newton. A strong 2nd half performance saw Heswall convert a 1-0 interval lead to a 6-1 trouncing of visiting Willaston. A Danny McGuiness treble was the highlight while Matty Houghton weighed in with a double and Ian Burrows also netted as James Jones replied for the losers. Ellesmere Port collected 3 welcome points due to a 3-1 success at Cammell Laird Reserves. Mike Jones put Port ahead following a free kick which was added to by a Carl McLeod penalty. John Atkinson finished off a sweeping 2nd half move before Lee Furlong reduced the arrears. The points were shared at Marine Reserves [Paul Pearson,2, Tom Amoss] where Marshalls [Phil Davies, Jay Nilson, Jamie Doyle] were the visitors and at Helsby [Matty Johnson] who played host to Upton AA [Richard Smart].
While Chester Nomads were busy disposing of Division 1 Christleton courtesy of an Ed Moss penalty in the Chester Senior Cup Ashville took over from them at the top of Division 2. Their 4-0 triumph at neighbouring New Brighton saw Ross Rule, Timmy Bigland, Craig Griffiths and Ged King hit the back of the net. Bronze Social collected their 2nd maximum of the campaign as Lee Dermody, Jay Thompson and Tom Harris obliged in the 3-1 defeat of Maghull Reserves [Craig Todhunter]. Capenhurst Villa had Graeme Davidson as a hat trick hero but lost out by the odd goal in 7 to Prescot Cable Reserves who boasted doubles by Sam Gifford and Kurt Sherlock.
Wirral Amateur Cup holders West Kirby Reserves will face Beb Athletic in this season’s final. In Saturday’s semis Kirby overcame Ashville Reserves 2-0 thanks to Ian Hobday’s brace while ace marksman Graeme Carvell went one better for Athletic as they brushed aside Heswall Reserves challenge with a 3-0 scoreline. In Division 3 a single Ian Cox strike gave Helsby Reserves the points at Marshalls Reserves and a Nathan Freeman brace spearheaded Upton AA Reserves 4-0 win over Mossley Hill Reserves. Merseyside Police [John McAllister, 2, Matt Tonge] returned to winning ways with a 3-2 victory over Capenhurst Villa Reserves [Andy Crawford, Jack Shepherd]. Adam Wilkinson hit 3 for Youth Division leaders Maghull as they eclipsed Neston Nomads 8-3 and Hale had 2 goal Brad Williams starring as their 4-1 defeat of Belfry lifted them into 2nd place while their opponents slipped to 4th. Halewood Town [Connor O’Shea, 3, Sam Sullivan] kept up the pressure by easing to a 4-0 win at Widnes and Helsby [Joe Robinson, Owen Rowlands, Chris Ingram] overcame Ellesmere Port [Steve Lawrenson] 3-1.
