WEST CHESHIRE LEAGUE
Round-up, week-ending 25 August 2012

As a Charter Standard League, the West Cheshire competition organises annual coaching sessions for all member clubs. During the 2012 pre-season emphasis was on goal scoring.
The session seems to have had a positive result with Division One fixtures averaging over 4 goals a game over the week.

Monday saw West Kirby host a resurgent Cammell Laird Reserve side at Marine Park. In keeping with the new trend of ‘goals galore’, they ran home winners by 4 goals to two. Prodigal son, Kevin Bimpson claim two goals for the home side as did Joe Bennett, one
from the spot. Laird’s responses came from John Breeze and Jon-Paul Wheedon.

The remaining midweek fixtures in Division One took place on Wednesday evening. The stand out score of the night was Chester Nomads 1-7 demolition of Christleton at Little Heath in a breath-taking derby game. Nomads scorers were (deep breath!): two from Kieron Smith, Matthew Carlin, Sam Burgess, Edward Moss, Sam Manton and an own goal from the hapless hosts. Ronnie Morgan scored for Christleton, hardly any consolation.

Hale hosted a thrilling 3-3 draw with Vauxhall Motors Reserves. Hale’s Wayne Smith, Robert Pennington and Kevin Duncan saw their efforts equalled by the visitors Mark Bainbridge, Josh Walsh and Danny Wainwright.

Equally enthralling was Mossley Hill Athletic’s 3-3 draw at home to a struggling Maghull side. A splendid Yusuf Malik hat-trick was answered by scores from Phil Stafford and a brace from Baqar Parvas. Newton took great delight in putting three past champions, Ashville. The heroes for the Frankby based club were Steve King, Dave Thompson and Paul Foy. The visitors sole reply coming from Tom Fardoe.

In the second Chester derby of the night, Blacon YC took the honours at home to Upton AA 2-0. Adam Langton and a penalty from Robert Joinson claiming all three points for the home side. Marine Reserves continued their decent start by taking all three points at home to Southport Trinity, 2-0. Teve Gale and Karl Bergquist claimed the spoils for Marine. There was only one goal at Gayton Park but Heswall won’t be complaining as it secured a win for them against Ellesmere Port, with Andy Brown doing the damage.

So to the weekend. Surely there couldn’t be an improvement on the average 4 ½ goals per game in midweek. Actually, there was! Chester Nomads continued their 100% record on the road at Ellesmere Port on Friday night, thanks to a brace from Dale Harris.

However, pride of place has to go to Cammell Laird Reserves who bounced back from their West Kirby disappointment in some style thrashing Maghull 10-0 at Kirklands.
Thankfully for this reporter, two Lairds players claimed four goals each, John Atkinson and Craig Cearns. Daniel Williams and Kristopher Hesketh took the score into double figures. Also bouncing back with some aplomb were Ashville who enjoyed a 6-1 mauling of Mossley Hill Athletic. A hat-trick from Stuart Speed, two from Jay Clare and one from

Danny McGill ensured Villa Park was happy again. Mossley’s reply came from Mike Forshaw.

More ‘bouncebackability’ was demonstrated, this time by Christleton who put their derby defeat to the back of their minds in winning 0-3 at Hale Park. A brace by Chris McGann and a third from Peter McGinnily laid the platform for a comprehensive win. Newton showed that their midweek win was no flook by hammering Marine Reserves on their own patch 1-4. Yet another hat-trick, this time from Dave Thompson plus a fourth from Ian Burrows made sure that the home side’s score by John Connolly was merely a consolation effort.

The ever impressive Jorden Brierley claimed an excellent hat trick in Vauxhall Motors Reserves trip to Upton AA. Added to that were scores by Ian Burrows, Tom Craig and Graeme Davidson providing a 10-6 for the visitors. Heswall managed to triple their midweek scoring but allowed visitors Blacon YC two goals. However Gordon Harrison, Chris Adamson and Domonic Holden goals claimed all three points. Blacon’s replies came
from Adam Langton and Michael Mackin.

West Kirby were unable to build on their midweek win, losing at home to Southport Trinity 1-3. A brace from Ian Morrison and one from Andy Vernon secured the win for Trinity. A penalty for the home sides Terry Cotgreave, scarce reward for there their efforts.

So, if it’s goals you want, the answer is West Cheshire football!
