North Hants May Cup Quarter Finals.
Hook, Twentyten and D C U K. all progressed through to the Semi Finals of the North Hants May Cup, as the frosty weather relented and all were played off. The other Quarter Final between Kingsclere and Broughton has yet yto be played.
It was D.C.U.K.who had the most emphatic win by beating Basingstoke Athletic 6-0 at Old Basing Rec. Athletic did well to hold out until the 30th minute and then Ross Harwood put away a cross from Finley Hall to see the favourites ahead and keeping well on top Stuart Austen headed home Ben Nicholls corner for their second in the 60th. Nicholls made it 3-0 and veteran Clint Bassett came out of retirement to add the fourth. Nicholls broke away to hand the fifth for Gordon Birch and final goal in their second half rout was netted by Ashley Elward. D.C.U.K will now be away to either Kingclere or Broughton in the Semi Finals.
It was no push over for Division One Twentyten against Herriard from a division lower, although in the end they won 5-3. With only 19 minutes gone Herriard were leading 2-0 when Sam Webber was put through by Alex Roberts, he then took on three men and slotted past keeper Harry Nash and it was Weber who then turned provider for Karl Buttle to score their second. Weber then hit the post and Simon Jane forced a good save from Nash. Two quick goals, both scored by Jake Tanner, his first from a Joe Hill assist and then in the 37th following a Tanner free kick, put Twentyten level and Hill made it 3-2 at the break. Hill then netted a penalty one minute into the second half and Manning added another. Herriard never gave up and Weber scored his second in the closing stages.
Sutton Scotney turned up at Hook with only ten men and Hook cruised through to the Semi Final with a 4-1 win. Although Dan Framp hit the post and James Westwood the bar, Hook found it hard going as the pitch cut up badly and had to wait until the 40th.to take the lead, Framp was their scorer after playing a one two with Dan Mouradian. The Andover League side started the second half much better and in the 50th they drew level.
In the 65th Mouradian took pass from Morgan Davies to restore the lead and two minutes later after being set up by Pete Silvester, Dan Mellors made it 3-1. The final goal was scored by Ton Davies after being put through by Framp. Hook are now away to Twentyten in the Semi Finals.
North Hants Junior Cup Quarter Final.
AFC Berg met Winklebury Wizards in the outstanding North Hants Junior Cup Quarter Final and won 6-2 after extra time, it will not count however, as in this competition if the score is level at full time, the referee should have gone straight to penalties and the match will have to be replayed on Saturday 11th February. For the record, it was Berg who had the better of the first half and after trailing from a 10th minute George Lagden free kick, goals from Lee Neal and Richard McCoubrie saw them 2-1 up at half time. Wizards were handicapped when they lost their keeper Scott Williams early in the game, but they battled and Josh Arthur equalized with two minutes left from a Dan Goodyear pass..
The Berg goals in the pointless extra time were scored by Neal, Mason Saunders, Ashley Burchett and Kieran Alleyne.
Basingstoke Saturday League
Division One
Basingstoke Royals suffered their third defeat after losing 5-3 away to Tadley Calleva A, but they retain top spot in the table by just he one point above Hook who have three matches in hand. It was the league top goal scorer Kye Theodore who came up with his fourth hat trick of the season to win this one and make his tally now 24 for the season.
It was Jamie West with their opener from a Gary Hibbs corner kick after just seven minutes and Theodore opened his account in the 25th when set up by Stephen Burgess. After he had hit the post earlier in the first half Steve Price pulled a goal back for Royals in the 56th he then equalized in the 70th when Craig Barker played him through. Substitute Ben Todd put Theodore through to make it 3-2 in the 75th and Michael Abbott headed in a long throw from Lee Champion to extend their lead. With a minute to go Sam Nicholls put Price through to score his and Royals third, but in the fourth minute of added time Theodore came up with another hat trick.
Basingstoke United chalked up their first league win since winning their opening three matches in September. It was against Bounty United at Castle fields where they won 5-2, with Gus Rees returning to the team after a two month absence and scoring a straight hat trick. His first in the 35th minute came following a pass from Reese Chapman and after Craig Williamson equalized with a header from a cross from Andy Neal, he had two more in the net by the 60th minute. Chapman then put them 4-1 ahead when Chapman took a pass from Sam Barton. Bounty came back with a goal from Alex Izzo from a Williamson cross, but Austin Kelly chipped the keeper for the fifth.
Division Two
There was a big upset to the promotion hopes of Basingstoke Labour Club when they were beaten 3-1 away to Overton United B. The home side took the lead after 22 minutes when Kyle Buckland picked up a 50 yard pass from Ewan Westwood and beat Gary Meffin, cousin of Manager Daniel Poulter, called into the Labour goal as a late emergency replacement. When Overton were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute, Meffin pulled off a fine save from the Westwood spot kick. Two minutes later Meffin made a brave save, but in doing so suffered a fractured eye socket, resulting in him being taken to hospital. In the 50th Labour drew level when a clearance by Westwood fell to Matt Kelly, who had already hit both the post and bar and his header looped over the stranded keeper Gavin Alexander. Overton regained their lead in the 66th when Buckland took a pass from Wat Jones and went on to beat Jack Barlow, who had replaced the unfortunate Meffin. Although Chris Waite hit the bar for Labour, it was Buckland who sewed up the points to see Overton a point behind leaders Herriard, after being set up by Scotty Winterbourne and so complete his hat trick.
At the other end of the table Longdog Soldiers remains in the bottom two after losing 3-0 to AFC Aldermaston A. Robert Chandler scored the first after 20 minute with a shot from the edge of the box. In the 30th it became 2-0 when keeper Jake Barnes did well to get a hand on a high ball in the six yard box, however half clearance fell to Tom Channon. . Jamal Rose, recently transferred from Overton, had two good chances but shot wide for Longdog and Tom Adams failed in a one on one with the keeper. The third for Aldermaston came in the 80th from VIncent Kennedy
